The IMS approach to recording: Performance First

Each sound engineer has a slightly different approach to how they record music. Just like every musician has a slightly different approach to playing their instrument. In fact, in most cases the sound engineer should be considered a part of your band as they have a great deal of influence over the outcome of your sound. A good sound engineer is able to achieve more than just a professional sonic quality. A good sound engineer is able to help you achieve the most out of your performance through supporting and creating a comfortable and energetic creative environment.

For this reason, we at IMS take a “performance first” approach to recording. Because if the performance is bad, the recording will be bad. As part of creating a comfortable and relaxed environment, Independent Music Studio is based out of a home. Current trends in the recording industry are showing a great deal of the best studios in the world are based in homes and home-like environments. Artists like Weezer, Interpol, and others record their music in home studios. This environment takes the pressure off the intimidating environment that some studios present.

Another way we help you concentrate on your performance is to take the focus off the time clock. Bands are always worried about cost - naturally. We have designed our studio to operate without overkill. Bands today don’t need 60 channel boards and an unlimited range of various instruments that no one is going to use. But some studios have these things and you, the local independent musician, have to pay for these overheads. Rather than having to support the studio with high prices, let your studio support you with the best gear without overkill. That is why we have custom tailored our equipment to meet the core needs of a band without all the extras.

Our clients are able to achieve more in the same time as compared with other studios because we understand what needs to be done to make the song work, not what makes us look expensive.

We are not benefited by circulating around terrible recordings with our name on them. So we are equally motivated to make sure your final product is top quality, but where the performance comes first. It was Chris Shaw, Bob Dylan’s recording engineer who said it best, “I would rather record the worlds best drummer in the world’s worst studio, than record the worst drummer in the best studio.” Let’s help record your best performances together.
